The Dalek Project – Introducing Damian
Everyone needs a Dalek in their life. I have always been curious about them, Dalek’s have an almost eerie something about them,, So I bought the plans from Project Dalek and decided to make my own Shawcraft Dalek.
Surprisingly the “skirt” was quite tricky to make, I used 6mm mdf. The angles, odd measurements just don’t make sense when you cut the bits out. But then, when you stand them all up, you suddenly realise you have a Dalek skirt!
I want my Dalek to be mobile So I asked the local community if anyone had an old mobility scooter.. The next day I picked it up and fitted it into the Dalek’s base. It runs on 2 12v motor bike batteries.
The shoulders were quite straight forward, I used fibre board as it is quite flexible. I made a frame to secure all the bits and fibre glassed over the outside to give it some strength.
The dome was the biggest challenge. I built a pyramid of wooden, and plastered over the top. Using a tool the right shape I carved the dome out of plaster. Finally I fibre glassed over the top. When off the mould I used clear gel coat to smooth off the finish, its not perfect, but it does make a good battle scarred lid for my Dalek.
The Dalek is covered in hemispheres, to make these i used plastic 4″ Christmas decorations. These are hemispheres of clear plastic that clip clip together and allow you to make your own decorations.
Each hemisphere was filled with expanding foam, and a 5mm bolt inserted. This anchors the hemi to the skirt
Daleks come with 2 options, a pincer or a plunger.. I opted for a pincer, at some point i will add an actuator to the pincer so it works. The gun is made from 25mm steel tube, both the gun and claw fit into 4″ stainless balls, the balls are supported by an internal socket which allows smooth movement.
The Dalek was sprayed in primer then REN174 – Renault Cinnamon Brown and its hemispheres and slats are Nissan Green Gold.
And there we have it, Damian now exists and haunts my garage
